Dear colleagues,

As the dates for EMAC get closer, we are sending you an update of
information and announcements. Please read until the end, as the topics are
quite varied: prizes, receptions, excursions, the next EMAC
 and much more!

UPDATED PROGRAMME ON THE WEBSITE

The updated programme is now available on the website. We hope (but cannot
guarantee!) that there will not be many changes to it as it stands.

LAST CALL FOR REGISTRATIONS

If the above programme has made you realise how much you might be missing,
you can still register to attend EMAC. Registration not only entitles you to
this academic programme, but also to some of the events below, and a
complimentary copy of the conference publication. Please follow the
instructions given on our website if you would like to register.

WELCOME RECEPTION AT UCL ON WEDNESDAY 9th

On the evening before the official start of the conference, we would like to
invite you to collect your delegate pack and stay for an informal wine
reception at the UCL Institute of Archaeology. Please join us from 6 pm
onwards! Follow this link for directions to get there:
http://www.ucl.ac.uk/archaeology/intro/contacts.htm

ANOTHER RECEPTION AT THE ISLAMIC GALLERY OF THE BRITISH MUSEUM ON THURSDAY
10th

We will have another reception to which all the delegates are cordially
invited, at the Islamic Gallery of the British Museum, on Thursday 10th at
6.15 pm.

CONFERENCE EXCURSION TO WEDGWOOD AND THE STAFFORDSHIRE POTTERIES

We can confirm our arrangements for the one-day excursion to take place on
Sunday 13th. We will be visiting the award-winning Wedgwood Museum at
Barlaston near Stoke-on-Trent, on the 250th anniversary of its foundation by
the ingenious entrepreneur Josiah Wedgwood. From there we will go to the
Gladstone Pottery Museum, the only surviving Victorian pottery factory
showing traditional production methods. The cost is £40 per person,
including travel and museum entrance fees (but not lunch). Please book
before 1 September by email to th.rehren at ucl.ac.uk (payment in cash during
registration). For more details of the one-day trip visit the EMAC website.

PUBLIC LECTURE

A public lecture by Gaye Blake-Roberts, Director of the Wedgwood Museum, is
scheduled for September 11th in the late afternoon. The lecture will be
followed by the conference dinner.

CONFERENCE DINNER AT THE BRITISH ACADEMY

Do not miss your last chance to register for the conference dinner, which
will take place on Friday 11th, after the public lecture, at the prestigious
British Academy, situated at the heart of London, a short walk from
Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace. The formal seated conference dinner
will be held on the first floor in rooms of the historic building, which
overlook the mall and other London landmarks, such as the Houses of
Parliament, the Big Ben and Westminster Abbey. Last day to book is 31
August!

PRIZES TO THE BEST STUDENT POSTER AND PRESENTATION

We will be offering two prizes for the best posters and oral presentations
by students. All you need to do is inform us that you are a student when you
collect your delegate pack, and you will be considered for the prizes! These
prizes will be announced at the closing ceremony on Saturday 12th

POSTER PRESENTERS - BRING A4 PRINTOUTS!

We encourage those presenting posters to bring small printouts of their
posters in an A4 size, for delegates to take with them. Unfortunately we
cannot offer you printing facilities here, but we will give you a folder to
hang these printouts next to your poster.

PUBLICATION

All authors of posters and oral presentations will be invited to submit
written versions of their work for inclusion in the volume that will be
published after the conference (subject to peer-review). The volume will be
published with Archetype, and we envisage papers with 5-7000 words,
following style conventions as per the journal Archaeometry. The deadline
for submission of manuscripts is 15 December 2009. More details about the
publication will be announced at the conference.

All the conference participants will receive a free copy of the volume once
it is published.

CALL FOR BIDS TO HOST EMAC 2011

We are hoping to hand on the baton to the next EMAC organisers during EMAC
’09. If you would like to organise EMAC ’11, please let us know at
emac09 at ucl.ac.uk . We will give you a chance to put your bid to the audience
during EMAC ’09, and all the delegates will vote for their preferred option.
The chosen option will be announced at the closing ceremony on Saturday
12th.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

The main focus of EMAC is the scientific study and archaeological
interpretation of ancient ceramics. Bringing together established scholars
and young researchers from a wide range of academic backgrounds, EMAC
stimulates an international and cross faculty exchange of ideas and
approaches.

The tenth EMAC will keep the traditional themes that give it its special
flavour. In addition, we are incorporating some innovations such as special
sessions on "From Craft to Science" and “Islamic Ceramics”, as well as a
more explicitly worldwide coverage (including non-European topics and
researchers)
